Have you ever heard the quote "Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to change the world"? Nelson Mandela,
one of the most admired public figures ever, made this statement.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in the city of Mvezo, in South
Africa, on July 18, 1918. His parents' names were Noqaphi, who died
when he was 12, and Mphakanyiswa. He started his degree for a
Bachelor of Arts but he was expelled for joining a students' protest.
He soon became involved in the anti-apartheid movement. He
joined the African National Congress in 1942. For 20 years, he led
a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African
government and its racist policies. In 1962 he was arrested and spent
27 years in prison for political offenses. He was finally released on
Sunday 11 February 1990. In 1993 Nelson and President FW de Klerk
won the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994, he became the first South Africa's
first democratically elected president. He died on 5 December, 2013
Nelson Mandela never hesitated in his commitment to democracy,
equality and education. He never reacted to racism with more racism.
For generations to come, Mandela will continue to be an inspiration.
